Life With Hands Empty

We are born with hands empty.

As we grow, we pick things up.

The more we hold on to, the slower we go.

Hold on to too much, and we drag to a halt.

We become lighter by letting go.

Letting go of what’s weighing us down.

Letting go of what’s eating us up.

Letting go of what was never ours to carry.

Reclaim access to your complete energy store.

Reinvest in a life where your inner child gets to explore.

A life where you are free.

A life where you are light.

A life where you are empty-handed, quick to move, and open to the possibilities of an abundant world.

This is why we let go.

Not because what we’ve picked up isn’t important.

But because life with hands empty might be more.

Stuck? Or Weighed Down?

The more you hold on to, the heavier life feels.

When you get in the habit of clenching tightly on to:

  • People
  • Places
  • Pains
  • Things
  • Thoughts

Your life eventually becomes so heavy that it drags to a halt.

How could this not be the case if day-after-day you continue to hold on to more than you let go of?

The knapsack that’s full of everything you’re trying to control will eventually surpass your ability to carry it forward. And you’ll be presented with a choice:

Either (1) let go of more so you can start moving forward again or (2) stay where you are and keep a tight grasp on all that you have.

And here’s the question you have to ask yourself: is what I’m holding on to serving me or is it just familiar (and comfortable)? Because if what you’re holding on to isn’t serving you…

Maybe it’s time to start letting it go.

Care-More-Ness

Freedom doesn’t come from care-less-ness (doing what you want, when you want to).

Freedom comes from care-more-ness (doing what you should, when you know it’s time to).

Because while it’s true that you are free to do whatever you want, you are NOT free from the consequences of those decisions.

Go ahead and rob a bank—you’re free to try. But, that’ll be the end of your freedom for a while.

Only those who care-more earn the type of freedom that allows them to do what they want, when they want to.

  • The more you care for your body, the more free your movement becomes.
  • The more you care for you mind, the more free your thinking becomes.
  • The more you care for your relationships, the more liberating those relationships become.

And so it is for the opposite of the above mentioned examples.

But, what about vices?

Caring more for drama, drugs, and distractions definitely doesn’t lead to freedom. Which is why caring more is about prioritizing the things you know you should be caring more about. Things like having vulnerable conversation, experientially living, and thinking deeply.

A destination that ends with more freedom, never starts with less caring.

Out With The Old

Like a dresser filled with old clothes, you have to let go of the old in order to make room for the new. If you feel like you have no time or space to do new things—things of interest to you—maybe it’s because your dressers are full.

This doesn’t mean you need to be done with something just because it’s old. Just that you should carefully inspect everything old—as you would if you were clearing out your belongings.

But, don’t let your possessive side take over.

  • That shirt you haven’t worn in over a year? It’s probably time to part ways.
  • Those jeans you had forgotten all about? Obviously weren’t missed when they were gone.
  • Your favorite button-up that you haven’t worn since it got stained? Yup, time to move on.

Being possessive is instinctual. We want to hold on closely to all that we’ve acquired. But, the more we hold on to, the more we become held down. The more we stuff our drawers will the old, the less space we’ll have for anything new. And the more stubborn we are with our current lifestyle, the harder it will be to upgrade to any kind of a new one.

Close The Loop

Satisfied people are far more thoughtful than unsatisfied people.

Worth pointing out: by thoughtful I mean someone who has shown careful consideration or attention.

What I don’t mean: someone who gets overwhelmed with impeding thoughts.

The benefit of being thoughtful up front, is that once you’ve paid the appropriate dues (in careful consideration or attention), then the thought becomes a closed loop.

In other words, once you understand what satisfies a person (you), you can be done thinking about it.

Otherwise, if you don’t know, only think you know, or outsource your thinking (to others who don’t know, only think they know or, even worse, to multi-million dollar media brainwashing campaigns)—the loop will stay open. And unsatisfied will remain the reality.

If you’re unsatisfied, rather than chasing forever fleeting desires, maybe spend more time in careful, reflective, reasoned thought.

Close the loop.

Holding On Vs Letting Go

The more you try to control something, the more it controls you.

The more you try to control someone, the more they control you.

The more you try to control in life, the more it all will control you.

The road to freedom has less to do with control and more to do with letting go.

If you want more freedom, rather than holding tightly to more, unclasp your grip and think about how you can hold on to less.
