A Flip Of The Switch

I started meditating a whole lot more once I stopped trying to do it perfectly.

What I realized is that a quiet corner, meditation pillow, and chunk of uninterrupted time aren’t required.

What’s required is an intention. Period.

Now, I meditate while walking, driving, waiting in lines, you name it…

What the intention does is declare to your mind that you’re now entering a different way of being. Without it, your mind will unconsciously continue to rambunctiously act non-meditatively—as it always does.

It’s like flipping a mind switch.

Once that switch is turned on and the light of your consciousness turns inward, you can begin to notice the urges that come up (that try to break you away from your meditation/presence), and focus on returning to your practice for as long as you may.

And suddenly, once you realize that a flip of the switch is all that’s required, meditation goes from another task you try to stressfully add to your already busy day—to an easily-intertwined-throughout-your-whole-day kind of task.

There are so many applications for this strategy in life.


P.s. When I do sit down to meditate, I use brain.fm to filter out invasive external noises. I’m a raving fan and currently on a 20-week use streak.

Lung Access

Dear busy person,

Before you check your phone throughout the day, commit to taking a long, deep breath first. Remind yourself that you are more than your notifications. That your phone is there to serve you; not enslave you. That being calm and centered is available to you in each moment—in each breath—just as the internet is (worth acknowledging the weight of that statement). You just have to choose lung access instead of always defaulting immediately to thumb access.

Ego vs Self Presence

Not all presence is created equal.

The goal is to be present with the Self in charge—so we can:

  • Feel our feelings
  • Embrace fleeting moments
  • Free ourselves from overthinking

The goal is NOT to be present with Ego in charge. It turns our present focus into obtaining:

  • Immediate desires
  • Comfort zones
  • Excuses

Ego presence burdens our future self. Self presence sends our future self beautiful gifts.

Rushing Feet [Poem]

rain scattered
wind thrusting
feet rushing
to escape

why run away
from that which I
was made?

one day
I will be rain
and gusts
pouring down
and pushing into
somebody else’s
rushing feet

and wouldn’t I
unable to speak or say
want them
to slow
and feel
and appreciate
...me?

The Pixels [Poem]

I sit for 20 minutes
Look at the clock
And realize it’s only been 3

What’s wrong with me?
20 minutes goes by in 3
When I look at a screen?

Why does sitting alone
Without the company of a screen
Screech things to an unbearable halt?

Why can’t I just be?
Here with myself
Without nervously checking

The pixels that seem to control me?

Change Everything Without Changing Anything

Sounds like a contradiction, eh?

Well, with this one ingredient, you can change everything about your day while simultaneously changing nothing about your day.

What’s that ingredient you ask?

Intentionality.

With intention, everything we do changes:

  • Have to go to work? Or get to go to work?
  • Mindlessly watching reels? Or curiously getting content ideas?
  • Rushing through traffic? Or taking a relaxing drive in-between tasks?
  • Speed-reading a book to hit a goal? Or reading carefully with the goal of understanding?
  • Playing a video game to escape emotion? Or playing a video game to rest your mind after a long, productive day?

Sprinkle a little intention into every task of your day and watch how everything changes without even one task being added or subtracted or moved.

Evenly and Mindfully

Filling our cups is hard enough.

  • Proper sleep
  • Firm boundaries
  • Self-care practices

Don’t let what liquid you’ve carefully filled go to waste.

As you would carefully and delicately place each step while walking with a brim-filled cup of blazing hot tea—so, too, should you walk throughout your day with a brim-filled cup of blazing hot human energy and potential.
